Once again

By lortega on May 14th, 2010

Just last month many Mavericks fans were feeling the lost of our team. But this is no surprise, but as a big Mavericks fan I always have big hopes during the post season as well as during the playoffs. Dreaming of once again taking home that prize that for these season is now over.

Besides loving the Dallas team, I have always been a Suns fan as well as a Lakers fans. But I have always hate on one team that many times has taken our dream from our hands. This year they did it again! The San Antonio Spurs. There is just something that I don’t seem to like about this team.

After loosing the series 4-2 I was sad. But I also knew that the team had try, and not completely giving up.

So, just as it was sad to see our season over, it was more than a pleasure to see the SA Spurs leave  the playoffs with no win agains the Suns.

As i was watching that final gave between the Spurs and the Mavs, I started writing some thoughs.

Once again we have failed

Once again we have loose

Once again our dream has fallen

Once again our dream has been vanished

Once again we started good

Once again we were the best

Once again we were the worst

Once again our dream has fallen

Once again, we were on the road.

Once again we were left behind

Once again were at the top.

Once again our dream has vanished.

Once again we dream big,

Once again we were the best

Once again there was hope

Once again we were left hopeless

Once again our dream was close

Once again our dream was far.

Once again Dirk was our hope

Once again Nowitzki was our hero.

Once again we shared excited

Once again we shared disappointment

Once again our neighbor was our enemy

Once again they were big

Once again they have our dream

Once again our dream was taken.

Once again the Dallas Mavericks are out.

Once again I was a fan.

Once again I was disappointed

Once again I hate the SpursOnce again I am a MaverickOnce again I am a MaverickOnce again I will be a Maverick

Once again I am a MaverickOnce again I will be a MaverickOnce again I have hope

Once again I believe in the Dallas Mavericks.

NINE

By amartin on May 14th, 2010

We just got done watching the musical NINE. I was unimpressed they had a star studded cast, many of them had sung before, why not take advantage of that and really go for it. It seemed the whole movie was building up for something spectacular and then it stopped and left it to be started over again. Most major parts of the song were in Italian. We have movies like Dream girls, Moulin Rouge, and Chicago you expect to have songs you can get into and belt in your car. I didn’t feel that way with this movie; I mean even Disney movies have better songs and they are more fun to sing. It was filmed beautiful and like I said early amazing cast of people.  NINE is about a famous writer Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) who has lost his inspiration when trying to write his next big movie, and the women he has loved and who love him. Included in that list are Kate Hudson, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, and Fergie. A plot summery from IMDB sums the movie up nicely. Arrogant, self-centered movie director Guido Contini finds himself struggling to find meaning, purpose, and a script for his latest film endeavor. With only a week left before shooting begins, he desperately searches for answers and inspiration from his wife, his mistress, his muse, and his mother. As his chaotic profession steadily destroys his personal life, Guido must find a balance between creating art and succumbing to its obsessive demands I told you it was a loaded cast. I won’t go into details because I don’t want to ruin the movie. If you like musical see NINE but don’t expect to be blown away. The movie was written well and the acting was great but when you hear musical you expect something more and X factor that was not in this movie for me.

Can you handle this?

By tkirkham on May 14th, 2010

Soccer is something everyone knows about even though they might not know everything about it. It is a game that is played all over the world but yet it doesn’t get the respect it deserves in America. Everyone I have met that has considered themselves a soccer player has more passion for the game then I have seen in any other type of player. They live to just be able to step out on a field again and play whether it is with friends or in a competition. They strive for excellence each game and will continue to be their worst critic even if they are ranked number one. No soccer player will ever tell you they want out of a game. They rather run until their teeth start to tingle from the lack of oxygen going through their bodies before they even think of coming off the field. Every game a player will give their very best even if the team they are playing is in last place and they are in first. A player will not give in or up no matter how bad they are up or down. They will keep pushing for the next goal or block. This is what makes soccer different then other sports and lets it be known throughout the world.

Soccer requires heart, dedication, and focus. Do you think you can handle it?

Thank you to all the Dallas Cup players for giving their best during their tournament this past weekend. Every team did a great job and keep pushing for greatness.

Update on my injury

By tkirkham on May 14th, 2010

I went to the doctor for my knee today and all went the exact way I thought it would. I went in thirty minutes early and field out the paper work like usual. I then sat in the waiting room for what seemed like forever before they finally called my name. I went in the back room for what seemed like a matter of seconds before I had to go get x-rays. I got three x-rays of the front and both sides of my knee. I went back to the room to sit and wait for the doctor to come talk with me and my father. We read a few articles about Charlie Sheen and Tom Hanks. Then the doctor came into the room and looked at my knee. He told me it was swollen and asked me what I did. I told him the story and he then pushed and pulled on my knee to see exactly where it hurt and see if anything moved that wasn’t suppose too. He told me that my x-rays were normal like he suspected. The only way the x-rays would come back not normal is if I had a tumor or something like that on my bone which is normally only found in older people. He told me the next step would be an MRI. This made me laugh because I told my dad before we even went into the back room that I would have to get a MRI before the doctor would know what is wrong with my knee. The procedures go doctor visit, x-rays, MRI, dye in the knee, and then surgery. The doctor told me the next step would be an MRI and then we would discuss our options depending on what the MRI showed.

Hurt again

By tkirkham on May 14th, 2010

Three weeks ago the intramural soccer season ended for my team. We tied the game the final game which did not move us to the next round. Once I walked off the court everything seemed liked it was alright. I went to go take more pictures for the Chronicle and Coach Stanson when I started feeling pain in my knee. My first thought was did I do the same thing as before or is this a new injury. My old injury took so many years and too many doctors to try to figure out what was actually wrong with my knee. In December of 2006, a doctor finally figured out what was wrong with my knee and after getting surgery my knee felt better, until now. I am having pain again in my knee and it is really swollen. I called my old doctor to set an appointment for him to take a look but I was told that he is out of town for a little over two weeks. Since there was nothing I could do medically to my knee before that, I took over the counter medicine to try to relieve some pain and swelling. I was taking Alieve every morning and night to try to make it stop but it wasn’t helping and the medicine started to cause other problems instead of help. So for about a week I have been without any type of pain medication or swelling relief. I was finally able to set an appointment for tomorrow, May 5, to see what is wrong with my knee. I’ll continue with this story tomorrow when I finally know what is going on.

Cheaters

By tkirkham on May 14th, 2010

Why do men cheat? I was with a twenty six year old man for four years and we were even planning on living together once the semester ended. I called him one night to check on him since he hadn’t called me yet. I called and called but he didn’t answer and sent me to voicemail. I was so scared that something happened to him. I continued to call throughout the night to check on him but no answer. Finally, after six hours of trying every hour to get a hold of him, he answered the phone. He cursed me out telling me that I was crazy for calling him so much and that he has been asleep all night. I asked him if he had been sleeping all night then why has his phone turned off and on and why does he sound so drunk. He hung up on me and by this time I was so tired I just went to sleep. The next day he didn’t call me all day until I was about to go to bed and the only thing he asked was, “are you happy?” I said yes and I told him to tell me what happened last night. He wouldn’t tell me anything. All he would say is he needs a break because I am too busy with school and work and I never have time for him. I was so heartbroken I called his friend to talk to him and to see what was going on. His friend then told me that he has been cheating on me for the past couple of months. His friend said that he told him that we were already split up. This hurt me so bad I didn’t know what to do. This happened only a few days ago and all my ex can tell me is that he wants to talk and give me my stuff. He still doesn’t know I know that he cheated and I don’t think I will ever tell him.

Kids these days

By tkirkham on May 14th, 2010

My nephews are twelve, ten, and five. When they get home from school, they have a routine that they have to follow every day. The first thing they have to do is homework and while doing homework they have to eat some type of fruit for a snack. Second, they are to do their daily chore which is either to empty the dishwasher or something easy and simple. Third, if there is time before their mom comes to get them, they are made to go outside. Every day it is a struggle to get them to go outside to play. I remember when I was young fighting my parents to go outside no matter how the weather was but for some reason children now days are not wanting to go outside. In fact they are fighting to stay inside. What has changed so much over the past twenty years that causes kids from hiding homework so they can go play outside to being forced to pick up a ball or go run around the block? After asking my nephews numerous questions about this peculiar occurrence they told me that they would rather stay inside and play video games or do something on the computer. I asked a few of their friends and they all said the same thing. Technology is advancing every day and it is causing people to stay inside more then it use too. It is helping evolve the world with amazing things it is able to do but when do we admit it is hurting us too. I understand kids have more fun in the virtual world but technology cannot provide everything people need. Kids still need to go outside and breathe the fresh air while getting the exercise of running around even if it is only for twenty minutes a day.

Alcohol

By tkirkham on May 14th, 2010

I’m twenty two years old, I work in a bar, and still to this day I don’t understand the point of drinking. Puking, falling over, and just flat out sounded like you are the most ignorant person in the world has never really caught my interest. I am around alcohol a lot during the week and I see people that are at the bar on a regular basis. They come in have a few drinks and then go home but some will come in and drink until we close then stubble out the door. Why people do it I don’t understand. I asked a few of the regulars why do they drink so often. I was told by a few because it “tasted good” which could be true for some drinks but I know for a fact it is not true for all. I was also told because they “just come in to socialize” which sounds like fun but then I asked them why do you have to drink alcohol then. I usually get a blank stare because they can’t answer the question either. Then I got the usual answer from people when you ask them things, “I don’t know.” I have known people who cannot go anywhere near alcohol without having a drink but I have also known people who only want to have a drink on special occasions. Alcohol is an interesting drink that has a different effect on each person that takes a sip of it. Even if I don’t understand why people drink you still need to be safe and never drink and drive. Drink responsible.

Finals are here

By tkirkham on May 14th, 2010

May 10 through the 13 are days that some students dread. With finals are right around the corner and many students, like me, are working around the clock to make sure they keep their good grades or are trying to make them better. As I walk around campus I see students studying and trying to finish up their homework assignments that they have postponed all year until now. As I walked around campus I have noticed a lot more students studying instead of playing computer games, on facebook, or whatever else they did between classes. I asked a few students that were studying if they were nervous about finals and what they had planned in order to prepare for them? Every student I asked said they are nervous about the exams but the only thing they can do is study. Students are making study groups and trying everything they can in order to do well on the final. They are staying up late, doing extra credit homework, and anything else they have to do or need to do in order to accomplish their goal. My goal of course is just like any other students. I want to pass my finals with “A’s” preferably but a “B” will do. So for the next week I will be studying and trying every little study idea that anyone passes on to me. Until the finals are over almost every college student will be impossible to get a hold of because we will all be glued to books, computers, and notes. So “A” here I come.

Experiencing ALDI

By amartin on May 11th, 2010

A new grocery story is hitting the Dallas Metroplex. In only a few months a new grocery store has become a sensation in certain cities.  ALDI started in 1976 in southeastern Iowa but it wasn’t until recently I heard about it. They claim to have the lowest prices on frequently bought household items. Being a money saver I was so excited when opened up a few blocks from my house. After seeing their ads in the paper I was blown away by the low prices. I finally had time to and my boyfriend and I set off to see what it was all about.  Thank goodness for my father that had already been to one and gave me low-down. When you go there bring a quarter for your chart cheek out and your own bag or pay for there’s.  I was so disappointed in the store, yes everyone was super nice and the price was low but now I know why. I knew to expect off brand but it was the quality of the product that disappointed me. It was funny to see the off brands of off brands. You know about Dr. Thunder instead of Dr. Pepper but they had GT Cola on O the orange cola. Fit and Active was another brand but after comparing nutritional fact, it’s about as healthy as a candy bar. The fruit was unripe and the expiration dates on bread and milk was 5 days away.  They only have about 1,400 items so don’t expect to price comparison. Of those limited products it’s hard to find what you want. We were excited to see tamales but they didn’t have chicken, beef, or pork. They had jalapeño and cheese even though they were in a box for beef. We still have to try the chicken and steak we got from there. I will say if that’s good I will be taking advantage of the 3.50 beef filet from Cattlemen’s. Then a lot of the stuff was about the same price as Kroger or Wal-Mart. They didn’t have any canned fruit that was in 100% fruit juice. Lastly the most disturbing thing was most of their products were broken, smashed, opened and leaking, or dinted.  They check out lady man handled our things throwing cans of food on to the bread and eggs. Then we had to walk over to what looked like a long changing table for babies and bag our groceries. This is another way they save money is making you bag your own groceries and returning your chart to the front of the store to get your quarter back. I was left uninspired and bummed. I had such high hopes for ALDI but I’m going to keep going to Kroger and Wal-Mart from now on.  Oh but if you want cheep bueaty products and a gas grill cheek it out.
