Intramural Co-Ed Soccer Is Here Again!

By tkirkham on May 14th, 2010

It is that time again, intramural co-ed soccer has begun sign up and its first set of games will begin on March 30 starting at 12:30. If you would like to play come down to the gym and sign up. Many teams are still looking for ladies to join their teams. If you don’t know the rules, its ok, we can teach you. All you need is a student I.D. and tennis shoes that don’t leave black scuff marks on the gym floor. This season there is twelve teams and it looks like it is going to be a great season. The season consists of two games a week, Tuesday and Thursday. The games can start any time between 12:30 and 2:00. There will be a schedule posted up in Guadalupe on the sports board across from the Richland trophies to let you know when your team will be playing. There are a total of five games for the season and then from there they will take the top teams and have a set of playoff games.

Each team can have eight players but only five men can be on the field at one time. So if you have a woman player then that means you will have six players instead of five. Plus you can also have a transitional player which can also be on the field as an extra player; this can make you have six or seven players on the field at one time. This will help you against the other teams who only consist of men.

Come play or watch the next couple of weeks and be prepared to be amazed.

Finals are here

By tkirkham on May 14th, 2010

May 10 through the 13 are days that some students dread. With finals are right around the corner and many students, like me, are working around the clock to make sure they keep their good grades or are trying to make them better. As I walk around campus I see students studying and trying to finish up their homework assignments that they have postponed all year until now. As I walked around campus I have noticed a lot more students studying instead of playing computer games, on facebook, or whatever else they did between classes. I asked a few students that were studying if they were nervous about finals and what they had planned in order to prepare for them? Every student I asked said they are nervous about the exams but the only thing they can do is study. Students are making study groups and trying everything they can in order to do well on the final. They are staying up late, doing extra credit homework, and anything else they have to do or need to do in order to accomplish their goal. My goal of course is just like any other students. I want to pass my finals with “A’s” preferably but a “B” will do. So for the next week I will be studying and trying every little study idea that anyone passes on to me. Until the finals are over almost every college student will be impossible to get a hold of because we will all be glued to books, computers, and notes. So “A” here I come.

Dance to the Census

By amartin on May 12th, 2010

For this story I was given a partner. We each took a different approach to the assignment. I focused on the two day event and what was going o. He wrote about what the census was and why it was important for students to fill out. We brainstormed some questions before we went to El Paso Hall to interview people. There were not a lot of students around the Census table, but we were told that they had a lot of traffic around 11 a.m. when class was getting out.
We talked Marcia Hines Parrish and her tile at Richland is the School of Teacher Preparation/Program Development. She was very nice, upbeat, and excited to help students. She explained to us that it is important that all residents fill out the census so that the government knows how to give out money to better or community.  She said the money could be used for a multitude of things from re-doing streets, building parks, and more.  The two day event consisted of dancing, music, food and free goodies.  Parrish also told us that it was more than informing the students about the census but providing the opportunity to fill out the census and have it mailed back for them.  I want to know if the Census Bureau looks for duplicates. The only reason I knew our census came was because I cheeked the mail that day.  Many students may have had their parents fill out and return the form without them knowing. The census employees at the table were rude and refused to comment. That confused me because you they were there to assist people and answer questions, so what is the big deal if you talk to reports about the census.

SOAR interview

By amartin on May 11th, 2010

It’s my first interview with someone at Richland, I’m a little less nervous than the interview with the cast of Calculus: the Musical. I guess it’s because I’m not being recorded, it’s more like an informational conversation.  Conner gave me the assignment today to talk to Myron Laster and find out what the SOAR program is. Thank God he and Dusty helped me brainstorm questions so I didn’t fall flat and embarrass myself.  Lucky for me Mr. Laster was awesome; he even offered me a BBQ rib from chili’s which is true friendship. He was real easy to talk to, very informative, caring and funny.  I didn’t know about this program until Conner gave me the story. It is really cool what they do to help low income and students that have learning disabilities.  With some help I prepared a whole page of questions mainly about what SOAR is and what they do to help students. I took away a lot of information away. I saw that the people that work in this department will do so much to help the participants succeed and go on to further their education.  We ended up talking for a couple hours about SOAR and a little about sports, because Mr. Laster’s office is full of football figurines. I’m sure he’ll love that I called them figurines but I don’t know of a different word. Overall I think my first solo faculty interview went well, I came back with some good quotes and story. I could have used more of an angle but I feel I got what I needed for an informational piece.

Seniors at RCHS

By mmoes on April 19th, 2010

I am a senior at at Richland Collegiate High School and I would like to share some feedback on the program. Time is running out and the year is about to end. We all are ready for graduation but we don’t have it easy like other High School students in our grade level.

The seniors have a Senior Project that they have to complete as the year ends. For our senior projects we are suppose to create a project that impacts society in some way. It has to be related to an economic or government issue and it has to be related to our career or major.

This is hard for me because I don’t have a chosen major yet. And being at RCHS I feel like I was rushed through the high school exploring time.

So, now it’s down to the wire. I have a week to get a project with meaning together and do a good job on it. And at this time of the year all of the other teachers start giving their big end of the semester assignments and I have a lot to do. At a time like this I really wish procrastination did not exist.

Parody Story I decided to do

By aalhayek on April 19th, 2010

Earlier this semester, due to my love of watching anime and cartoons, I decided to parody an favorite  anime of mine called “Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya”, in which a girl named haruhi Suzumiya wants a Time traveler, alien, and esper, and adds three members to her Club(in which one is an alien, an esper and time traveler but haruhi doesnt know) with the help of classmate Kyon(the normal person) and in which she unconsciously has superpowers which can create, alter and destroy the world. The parody that I’m writing is mixed anime/toon in which characters from family guy, lucky star anime, looney tunes, phineas and ferb(disney), and other cartoon and anime characers such as animaniacs, digimon. The Parody stars Peter Griffin who will parody the title character, Haruhi herself will parody the normal person. The Parody is title”melancholy of Peter Griffin”And Hopefully if I do finish this I can air it on my last radio show for this semester.
Preview of the Series:

Disclaimer: I do not Own the characters or series, I only own the parody writing ideas, All Characters are property of their respective owners.

Yes, a full class period

By tkirkham on April 19th, 2010

Why is it mandatory for students to stay for a full class session? We understand the professors still teach up until the last minute but if a student must leave to go to work, pick up brothers or sisters, or whatever other reason they deem necessary. Then why do professors get upset or they punish the students grade? A lot of Richland College students are parents, have a full time job, or both and they need to leave some classes early in order to do the other demanding things in their lives. When they ask to leave class early the professors either question the student for a few minutes getting every detail about what they are doing or they say “no you can’t”, without even asking why the student needs to leave early. Do to the professors not allowing the students to leave many students are arriving late to work or missing picking up their children from daycares. Even though it is only five minutes that they are late it could be fixed by leaving class five minutes early.

Some professors are saying that if a student needs to leave early then why did they sign up for the class time instead of signing up for one earlier or later? The reason why students have those class periods is because they were able to fit the class in and make a very good percentage of it instead of not being able to make it at any other time. If teachers would understand that we are trying very hard to fit in classes with our busy schedules and work with us on days that are harder than others. Then we would all be able to make it possible for all students to go to college and graduate.

Snow In Texas?

By tkirkham on April 19th, 2010

Today it snowed for the first time in my life. Yes, in the years before we have had snow flurries but nothing like we have had today. It reminded me of when I lived in Des Moines, Iowa about two years ago when the middle of the United States got a bad ice/snow storm. It turned everything white and it was so beautiful. You saw kids who have never experienced snow before run outside when they first woke up to play in something that they weren’t sure how long it would stay, but it stayed alright. It stayed all day and people young and old played in the snow that day. Later on that night the news came on saying that this is the most snow we have had in over one hundred and eleven years. When I first heard that number, I couldn’t believe what they were saying. There is no way Dallas, Texas received that much snow, but somehow it did. The snow lasted just a few days before it was completely gone. All the car accidents were able to be cleaned up, children were able to go back to school, and Texas went on like it was a normal day. What was once a winter wonderland is now a wet puddle of mud.

It has now been a week since the snow and it looks like it never happened. All is left is broken tree branches and a few damaged cars. The snow was a beautiful experience for a lot of people but for others they are so glad the snow is gone.

Election night recap

By Randy Lovelady on March 9th, 2010

Last Tuesday night, i was one of the many students who volunteered to help with the

department’s coverage of the primary elections. I was looking forward to it because i had

never helped to cover an election night before so i was interested to see what it would be

like. We all volunteered to do different tasks as part of our coverage, and i volunteered to

do video editing. I hadn’t really ever done video editing before so i was eager to try it out

and see how it goes. I was shown how to do the video editing during the day so that i would

know what to do when our evening coverage began. When our evening coverage began,

they had food for us to eat in the Newsroom, and were quickly getting everyone organized

to go out on the various tasks that they were assigned to do for our coverage. There were

three different teams that were sent out to cover both the GOP and Democratic watch

parties that were held in various locations around the city. The students in the Newsroom

were constantly looking up on the AP Wire to check on the results of the various races, and

announce them. We then did live election reports from the Newsroom to update the results

as they came in. I thought that i would actually get to do more editing than i actually did. I

did get to edit one piece of video that we did as part of our coverage, but not anything else.

We thought that i was going to be able to edit some of the footage that we got from our

teams in the field, but they got back to the school later than we thought and they started

editing it themselves. It was a little disappointing, but at least i got to do a little editing.

Overall, it was a great experience, and i am glad that i decided to

help out with it.

My First Semester

By Jeff Chavez on December 5th, 2009

Richland has been a blast. I went back to school after about 15 years out. I chose Richland to see if I was still “young enough” to learn( a reference to that “old dog/new tricks” saying). I have been stuck at my jr year since leaving the University of Houston in 1994. I signed up for two classes in fields I love and have worked in before, film and tv productions. My main goal was to get up to speed on the latest technology such as computer editing and all thing digital nowadays. Back in my day, sonny, we did everything on Video tape. In fact my radio carreer was cut short, when ole Mr. Computer took over my night shift. I have done some acting on commercials, but that is not production or behind the scenes work.

Well, to make a long story short. In one semester, I have learned how to edit, shoot, capture, work with sound and put together a pretty good package. This is all due to Richland’s great journalism program. In it is my field, TV productions. The department encourages journalism, but it offers such a hands on tv production oppurtunity. I thank all instructors for the advice and knowledge they have given us.

If you as a reader have time check out our news channel on youtube. (http://www.youtube.com/user/KDUXtv) All stories are a team effort and I am proud to say I was part of it. We all have come a long was since early September and the sky is the limit for spring.
